Activities That Will Blow Your Mind At Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
Far from the beaches and natural forests that are widespread across Oregon, lie the Oregon Dunes. They are located along the state’s Pacific Coast and feature wind-shaped sand dunes and you could be forgiven for thinking that you have landed yourself in a more desert-like environment. However, bird lovers will find much to keep them coming back again and again. If you like off-roading, you will get plenty of kicks here on an OHV, surrounded by the dune vegetation.
While the area might seem desolate to visitors, the truth is that there are many activities that you can engage in here.
Given that it extends for over 40 miles, it’s a perfect place for both kids and adults.
Hike To Oregon Dunes Day Use Area
Before reaching this more protected spot, you’ll have to hike for one mile along the Oregon Dune trail. The hike is a great way of exploring the sand dunes and kids will definitely love the feeling of exploration.
It’s a fun outing for family and chances are that you’ll be able to find a secluded spot in the area once you get to the beach. Make sure that you bring your picnic tables and viewing decks for spectacular views of the dunes and the beach.
Hike On John Dellenback Trail
This trail is usually suitable for older kids who like a bit of adventure. The trail goes through the dunes and a dense forest before ending at the beach. The best part about this trail is that the next point is usually marked by poles. This means that you need to spot the next pole in order for you to know where you are headed. This gives it a feeling of adventure.
Water Activities At Honeyman State Park
If you want a place where your kids can play in the sand dunes as well as engage in other activities (we know how fast they can get bored!), then Honeyman State Park is a great place to visit. The park stretches for over 2 miles and has two lakes ideal for swimming. You can also go kayaking or canoeing here.
The sandy stretch makes it a great place for building sandcastles in the time-honoured tradition and your kids will definitely love the place.
Tour Through Spinreel Dunes
You can decide either of two options; take the tour through the dunes to the beach or have fun on the ATVs and buggies available in the area. Both activities are deeply satisfying that you might get spoilt for choice. You can also decide to engage in both if you so wish. However, it’s important to note that ATVs can only be rented out to kids over 10 years.
Family Fun Centre
The Sandlands family fun centre is a great place for the family as well. You can head on tours around the dunes with the buggies or go on trails by foot.
